My english competence in 2009

I'm doing English now for many years and now it's the time to see the best work done on Batxillerat. This is what I consider to be, my best oral presentation, together with my school mate Chanez Selloum. Since it's our last year on school before University we decided to talk about Universities in England, the most recognized and reputated all over the world.
The best written evidence i'v got are a dialogue and news comment about President Obama. This to written documents reflect the maturity and the interest for global confrontations or problems, something everyone should be interested for, yet it effects everyone.
I think it makes my best work because it reflects the vocabulary used such as perhaps some specific words learned during the reading of news and books in English. Just as said before it also shows the maturity of the writer and an interest for the world.
The oral presentation but shows how fluent I am and what I am able to do. I think the way we express is very natural and pretty easy, without being afraid to speak in a different language which is not mine. It also shows what we have learned and a interest for overseas.

ISRAEL vs. PALESTINA

tv host: Hello everybody !!!! :):):)
In Middle East there are problems, and one of the most importants is the war between Israel and Paslestina. Today, here, tere is an israelian who will explain us what happen and how she defend her religion and her land. Hello Sarah!
Sarah: Hello Tim! Yes, it's true, we have a lot of problems but I think we are right. All our lives we had been discriminated and mistreated. Hitler and nazis began a genocide and the survivors had no place to go. I don't think that Israel has the militar power to kick the palestinans out of our land.
Tim: Ok. This is an israelians opinion about this issue. Now, we'll gonna hear a palestinian one!
Shiva: Hello Tim! Yes that's true, but we have the same problems that they have. Genocide is alsi familiar for us. Anyway, I undestand that you are angry that we are in Jerusalem too. But for both it represents our country, our promissed land and religious influences both sides. Both see Jerusalem like a holy place and everyone wants to defend what's for them . But I am sure that there us an alternative to resche the conflict.
Sarah: I agree with you that there's an alternative. But I think that Jewish people don't have any other place to go. We went to Europe and they killed all that they could. And because of that we decided to return to our promissed land and now palestinians wants to kich us out. And they have a lot of islamic countries to go, whereas we can't leave elsewhere.
Shiva: Yes that's true, but we were raced. We were born here it's also ower home!
Sarah: I do eather. But you also have to understand us. Yet you believe in the Coran so do we in the Torah. And it says that Yahvé promissed us a land and that was Jerusalem, and it still is.
Shiva: But Mahoma, when he ran away from Mecca he also talked about this our Jerusalem. Mecca is a place where we go for devotion, but Jerusalem is our home, a holy place for us eather.
Sarah: I know what you mean, of course. And you say it now, you have two or more holy places to go and we only have Jerusalem:our place and the one of our ancestores.
Shiva: But being your holy country and our's too. Don't you think it's possbile to live together in peace there? Respecting each other beliefs. In the end, Torah, Coran and Bible talk and predicts about respecting each other.
Sarah: I think that we can't live together in the same place. This isn't the solution for the problem. But I'm sure that we can find a solution but it will be really difficult because we are fighting for our believe, and the religious fights are very difficult to resolve.
Tim: And now the time is over. That was a really

My Portfolio Presentation - Analize your work - My english 2007-2009

Today I'm going to comment my first and my last written document on the portfolio. We're comparing work from 3 years in my case so let's have a little look on what happened since 2007

First of all I have to say that i don't notice much change in my written documents so the only thing that really catches my eye is that i managed to write less orthographic errors, something I'm really proud of. Since i see now the way a wrote two years ago and how i write now, I also am able to see that I'm more mature in my expressions. I don't use that much slang anymore and I'm able to construct phrases without the three points. I wrote like I would speak, something that I shouldn't do writing a formal comment for my portfolio. I also noticed that I feel more comfortable using connections such as "as a matter of fact" or similars in order to enhance one paragraph with an other. I also learn some words that I try not to forget and use in my compositions.
Perhaps, since I don't use much english at home because of the studies, latley i feel less comfortable writing and it's a little hard for me to write a good composition. It's something that I'm struggleing with since the beginning of my english studies: feeling more comfortable writing and speaking, having no fear to commit any error with it.
I think, i have learned to speak more fluently with the oral presentations and the fact that we aren't alowed to speak catalan in class. Speaking english is a big help, such as watching films to learn how to spell some words which is perhaps the most difficult to learn for everyone. The structures I use now talking are also better than before. I don't get struc anymore and I don't forget so easy what I wanted to say. Of course, something that improved a lot in the new english classes has been the speaking of every pupil as well as mine as one of them.
I have less problems with the presentacions also. They come more natural and they were difficult to understand for anyone. Speaking clearly and using a good pronunciation helped a lot.
To finish, I defenitly can say that there's a change from 2007 to 2009, which I'm glad for since it was not only the objective of our teachers, but also mine.

Here you've got my first and my last written document on the porftolio. I'll put the oral presentation in the next post.

Summary of a film

The Interpreter by Sydney Pollak:

The film is about a woman who's working at the UN as an interpreter: she is the little voice that translates a lot of languages into one, in her case English. The main carachter, Silvia Broom was learning the flute but she forgets once her flute in her office at the UN. As she went there she listens to two man who where speaking in an African language named Ku. They talk about a rebellion and a plan to kill the president of a country named Matobo, invented by the film makers.
The man who's suposed to leave a speach is named Edmund Zuwanie, who's considered to be trailed for ethnic cleansing in front of the Internacional Criminal Court, the liberator and that dictator of Matobo. During the film we get to know that Matobo is a conflictous region where 3 man are struggeling for the power: Edmund Zuwanie, Kuman-Kuman a business man and Ajene Xola a pacifist. Zuwanie as well as Kuman- Kuman were at the same time in New York, both for speaches.
The thing is that in Matobo is a rebelion in order to safe the country.
Silvia, searching for her flute but, was seen and since then followed by the man in the UN speaching room. The man who follows her, also from Matobo starts with researches to find her but Silvia get help from the secret service, specially from a Tobin Keller who works for the secret service and who lost his wife two weeks ago. He first thinks she lies but then realizes that she's telling the truth so he starts with an observation together with other memebers of the secret service. Silvia menawhile tries to contact with a man called Philippe, and olf friend of her. We get also revealed by the time that Silvia was born in Matobo and that actully took part of a militant movement with Ajene Xola, with who she felt in love. After she finds Philippe and meets him at a park, he reveals that Xola died. Silvia also wants to know what happend with her brother, the only living memeber of her family but Pihilippe don't wants to say nothing. The thing is that Silvia contacts with Kuman Kuman telling him that he's the man who wants to ruin Matobo. He tells her than that this isn't true and that he wants a coalision with Xola in order to fight Zuwanies regime and if he's really dead it wouldn't be good for him either. At that moment, the man who was following Silvia all the film arpund enters in the same bus than she is with a bomb. Silvia gets out the bus before the bomb explodes but a secret service memeber as well as Kuman-Kuman die on the terroristic attempt.
Silvia gets deeply frsutrated and depressed after Keller tells her that he had lost one of his man there and they start to getting closer. The target of the plot organized by the ku speaking man in the UN seems tu be Zuwanie so Keller must do what he can in order to prevent this. Silvia than explains what she knows, what happend in Africa years ago and whos Simon, her brother. Things happend fastly and from one they to another they found Silvias friend Philippe the photographer suicided at his hotel room. his bag is still there with notebooks and things from here brother. After a while Silvia gets the bag with card in it, which Keller for national security reasons already had readen. Philippe tells in the card that he wasn't brave enough in the moment to tell her the truth: Simon was shot to death by football playing kids in a stadion, as well as Ajene Xola. Silvia finds also a notebook with words her brother liked the most as well as a list with names of people killed in the war. Under the names she finds under the list are the ones of her parents, her little sister and lately, Simons. She than tooks a pen and writes Simons name down, death by suicide.
From here on things happend quikly: Silvia decides to talk with Zuwanie in who she once hat so many hope that he may change things. She gets into the UN and waits for Zuwanie in the safe room of the UN, a room were nobody is supposed to get in without a security card she has. It's revelaed that the plot was planned by Zuwanies bodyguard Nils Lud, a dutch mercenary who killed the man who had to do as he kills Zuwanie with a sniper rifle, than killed by Keller.
Silvia Meanwhile wants Zuwanie to read from a book he once wrote down, giving hope to all the people of Matobo. Keller enters in the safe room while Silvia is pointing with a gun on Zuwanie.
The thing ends with Zuwanie trield before the International Criminal Court and Silvia is free and goes back to Africa.

There were two things that impressed me much: On one hand of course the philosophy dealed in the film: A part from the matobean trial is that a man who murdered someone beloves is budled and put into a little ship who moves over a river. He that falls into the water and the person who lost the beloved person decides if he wants to safe the murder and stop mourning and continuing living in peace or if he allows him to drown and keep mourning evermore without forgetting.
On the other and the last workd that Zuwanie says in the film "even the lowest whisper can be heard over an army if it tells the true".
Keller who lost his wife in an car accident changes his mind: when he first wanted to drown the car driver he then decides to safe him mentally. The same happends to Silvia.

At the end of the film Silvia says in Ku: Angota ho ne njumata ("The truth needs no translation.")

Dialogue

Think of a profession that is dying out, for exemple a shepherd/farmer. Write a diaglogue with one of the last shepherd/farmer of your country. Talk about their way of life now and before.

I:
For how long have you been a farmer? It's a hard job I see...
F: Since i finished University. My father who also was a farmer... I inherited the farm from my father, wanted me to study a degree in agriculture.
I:
Where there many students in your class?
F: No no... we where just 5 pupils...
I: Oh! really?
F: Yes!In fact there were some classes where just 2-3 students were there...! (laughing)
I: Oh! What a shame!
F: After comminh back I started working the ground. It was a hard start...
I: I imagine so! When did you get up? Quite early really?
F: Oh yes! I had to get up at 5.30 am... which is hard...
I: Oh I know... (laughing)
F: And i had to feed the livestock, take care of the animals, bring them out, help animals if they were born..
I: Must be pretty exciting?
F: Yes it is... but time passes by and, when i before had lot of species here, I now had to specialize in one, cows, pork, chicken.. everything else would be a death sentence for my own economy
I: How sad!
F: It is... no animals which are running around, no kid that are playing with them.. It's a shame... you know? I did a lot for this farm but... I'm losing everything... Modern time have arrived and it seems that everything old is dying out.
I: It seem that no one remembers old values and old good times on the land right?
F: It's even worse. They don0t appreciate anymore this values or the work others do depend on... everything is done by machines... it seems, even animals.

Composition II

Write about the influence of psychologists on our society. Are they well considered? Could they be the answer to our psychological necessities?

Today a high percentatge of people in society are consulting frequently a psychologist. As a matter of fact, 20th century is the century of mental diseases. Depressions, anorexiam bipolarism are just a few from a mount of psychological problmes.
Psychologists are nowadays very important. Nevertheless, acoin always has two sides. Let's see the two:
On the one hand a lot of people, the majority appreciacte psychologists as much as their family and friends: they're the confident, the one with any kind of solution for their problems. They can help you with the most sophisitcated mental problems, ans even further. Not just a shy guy can be helped, but aOn the other hand but, mostly older people don't agree with this. For them, a psychologist is only a charlatan, a liar, nonsense. The only person who can help you to overcome a problem is yourself, and if they're religious, God.
Not just personally but also in general, psychologists help a lot nowadays. Jobs are getting stressful more and more, and much more it you have to include the family stress and the fight of survive in our society.
It's obvious thats it's necessary to have psychologists, for adult as well as for children, moreover people should learn from psychologists what it's called self-help. In the end we shouldn't depend on them always and manage or deal wich everyday live by ourselfs.

Reflection of my oral presentation

I think it was quite ok and well done. The only thing that actually really failed was the thing with some pictures like the Cambridge Crest which is really sad :(
I forgot what to say sometimes and than i just said aaaaaaah, a thing that should not happen again!
Anyway, I felt very comfortable doing this presentation and even forgetting things that I consider important, I felt good speaking in front of the class which is actually a big step forward, because before this year presentations I felt very uncomfortable and really under pressure. This time it's natural! ^^
